Palm Springs, California — When David Villa first moved to Palm Springs more than 10 years ago, he didn’t expect to live there forever.
He knew it would be his home.
“I thought this was a nice place for me to grow up and be around people I love,” he said.
But things changed quickly.
Now, Villa is a father and a grandfather, and he knows he has to do more to protect the community.
“It’s been a rough couple of years, but I think I’ve got the fortitude to go through this,” he told reporters this week.
The Palm Springs Public Schools district is struggling to keep pace with rising numbers of students, with the number of students in the district now nearly double the number it was a year ago.
But, according to some of the district’s most recent data, there are nearly 50 students per school, up from about 22 students per day in 2015.
While some parents are struggling with their kids’ needs, others are finding ways to support them.
A group called the Palm Springs Community Partnership for Children has launched a website to help support Palm Springs’ children.
“There’s a lot of children out there who are in need of the support they need,” said Laura Burt, the director of community partnerships.
Burt is one of the volunteers helping with the website, and she said the website is a way for the community to come together and help out.
“We want to bring together all the families, to show that we care, and we are willing to work with the district to do this,” she said.
Villa said that he has received more than 1,000 calls from parents, but many of them were in regards to school safety.
“A lot of them are concerned about the safety of their children, and they’re trying to get through this in a way that’s safe,” he explained.
“The way we are trying to do it is we’re giving them a plan to support their children,” he added.
Burt said that many of the parents are trying the same thing.
“One mom was saying, ‘You know what, I’m taking my children to my grandparents’ house, and her grandkids are coming to her home for dinner, and it’s just a matter of, what’s going on with them?
What’s going to happen to them?,'” she said, adding that the district has received a lot more calls in regards the safety at school.
In addition to helping out with the online website, the group is also working to create a support group for Palm Springs schools, with Burt as one of its chair.
“Some parents, they don’t have a voice,” she explained.
“And they’re feeling really disconnected from the community because they don.
They’re worried about the students’ safety, and so they’re starting to have that conversation with their peers and their parents.
On Tuesday, the Palm Center for Civic Engagement held its first-ever public meeting to discuss the crisis facing Palm Springs.
The Palm Center, a non-profit organization, is trying to create more community support centers, according the Palm Desert Sun.
In an effort to build support for schools and to help the district stay safe, the organization is hosting a “Community Safety Summit” to be held on June 16.
“This is a very important issue, and the community is stepping up to be involved.””
The goal is to find ways to be a safe place for children,” Burt said.
